Ariel Bates started this petition to Ruffwear and

Ruffwear recently released a line of working dog gear that is available ONLY to Guide and ADI approved Service Dog Organizations. While this may seem great at first glance, those of us who are Service Dog handlers see the harsh reality of discrimination raising its ugly head. There are two ways a Service Dog can be trained under the Department of Justice’s “Americans Disability Act”. The ADA states:

“Q17. Does the ADA require that service animals be certified as service animals?
A. No.  Covered entities may not require documentation, such as proof that the animal has been certified, trained, or licensed as a service animal, as a condition for entry.

There are individuals and organizations that sell service animal certification or registration documents online. These documents do not convey any rights under the ADA and the Department of Justice does not recognize them as proof that the dog is a service animal.”

The ADA supports Owner Trained Service Dogs. Contrary to popular belief, the mass majority of well behaved Service Dogs that you encounter have been painstakingly trained by disabled owners. We put close to 3,000 hours of training into our dogs before we would hope to call them “finished”. These dogs are in many cases, better trained than any organization dog, and are far better equipped to mitigate our disabilities than a program dog that has not been exposed to the minute difficulties of our daily life, and therefore, unable to be trained in small tasks that we don’t think of when telling a program how to train the dog.

While we applaud Ruffwear in their attempt to limit the amount of Fake Service Dog handlers that have access to Service Dog Gear, they have done so with the heavy expense of discrimination. We the aftersigned, would love to work with Ruffwear to insure that those trying to play the system don’t have access to Service Dog Gear, but also giving legitimate Service Dog Handlers access.
