It is no secret that Boris Johnson is a great admirer of Classical Athens and that he even hero-worships the Athenian statesman Pericles. In Athenian democracy the citizens had the power to remove politicians from office and go as far as ostracising them, a procedure by which a citizen deemed to be a threat to the state could be banished for 10 years. Pericles himself shortly before his death was removed from office and fined whilst other hugely influential leaders over the years such as Themistocles and Cimon were also ostracised. After Boris Johnsons behaviour in recent months, namely using lies and empty rhetoric to leave the United Kingdom in an extremely perilous position by its exit from the European Union whilst simultaneously benefiting himself via his advancement to foreign secretary, it would be just for Boris to meet a similar fate as the Athenian politicians he worships.
