Minnie

I was so bowled over by what Minnie's brave, selfless parents did when they discovered she was born with a serious heart defect and a condition that affected her breathing, and as a result was unlikely to survive that I would share it. It was actually Mr & Mrs Duggleby Minnie's parents who approached the hospital staff about donation. They decided they wanted to prevent other parents going through the same agony they had as they watched Minnie slip away. Minnie became one of the youngest donor's ever at only 23 Days Old. Minnie's kidneys saved a young adults life and her parents have a received a letter from the transplantee in gratitude. So although Minnie was a child and wouldn't have been directly affected by the Soft Opt out system, the introduction would mean everyone in the UK is made aware of Organ & Tissue donation and the change and encouraged to access the most up-to-date information about transplantation in order for them to make an informed decision. Also making being a donor the norm means it is more likely there will be more parents such as Minnie's who will feel able to donate their child's organ and tissues in the unthinkable circumstances of their death. I think Mrs Duggleby's quote sums her and her husband’s decision up: "Being a hero doesn't mean you're invincible, it means you've been brave enough to stand up and do what's needed."
