For a number of years young students have been preyed on by landlords in regards to student accommodation costs. The majority of students have no choice but to move away from home for university and their only choice is to move in to over-priced , shared , low-quality accommodation.

The cost of this accommodation can often add up to more per year than students receive from student loans - thus meaning they have no other choice but to take on a job (sometimes more than one) on top of their studies, to be able to afford to stay in private accommodation plus the costs for food and so on that are put on top of that.

Statistics revealed in December 2017 that the average weekly cost for student accommodation is £128 or £5,125 per year. Some students have even been faced with the extreme stress from costs that they've even decided to drop out of university as they deemed this the only solution.

This petition is calling on the Secretary of State for Education, Damian Hinds and the Secretary of State for Housing, Communities and Local Government James  Brokenshire to work alongside local landlords and Universities to work together and put a cap on the amount that they are allowed to charge students per year - as it is extremely unfair for them to be expected to work full time on top of studying full time just to be able to afford a place to stay.
