Prevent Animal Cruelty on Pelorus Island, QLD

The Issue

Hinchinbrook Council is releasing dingoes onto a Great Barrier Reef island to kill feral goats.

The four wild dogs, two of which have already been released on Pelorus Island, will not have a chance to become pests themselves, as they have been implanted with the horrendously cruel time-activated poison, 1080.

I'm calling for Mayor Jayo, Lee & Ben Allen and Hinchinbrook Council to be charged with breaching QLD's animal cruelty laws.

Importantly, the dingoes have been placed on the island by government authorities. The QLD Animal Care and Protection Act (Section 17) sets up a concept of duty of care to animals. The authorities owe a duty of care to the dingoes because they trapped them, implanted the poison and put them in that environment and are therefore ‘in charge‘ of them. As such, they have breached their duty of care.

Section 37 also prohibits a person in control of an animal from allowing it to injure or kill another animal. By allowing the dingoes to hunt and kill the goats (and other animals on the island), they are also in breach of this law.
