The myxomatosis disease is spreading throughout Southern Adelaide after the recent heavy rain, creating perfect conditions for mosquitoes to breed and kill off our pet rabbits.

My rabbit, Matilda, has not yet contracted the virus but vets are certain that the disease will slowly spread around Adelaide and kill most of the rabbits.

Myxomatosis was introduced in Australia in the 60's to destroy the wild rabbits, but the disease has gotten out of control.

The vaccine is a weakened form of the virus and it is currently unavailable in Australia as it is a 'possibility the vaccine could spread to wild rabbits'. I think this absolutley outrageous. If my rabbit contracts the disease am I meant to sit there and watch her die! No! Thousands of rabbits have already been killed because of this disease, and it is ridiculous that a vaccine should exist but not be used to it's full potential!
