KEEP Old Town Elementary UNITED

KEEP Old Town Elementary UNITED
The Issue
Kids and families attending Old Town Elementary have been attending Walsh Middle School, in RRISD since it's opening in 2008. The RRISD's Attendance Boundary proposal will separate students of Old Town Elementary that have been attending school together as long as 6 years, if not more. This is disheartening to our Old Town community who are not just neighbors, but together have a strong family presence!
Old Town has been established for over 25 years. In addition, there are a number of families that have children currently attending Walsh and will have siblings moving into middle school. These families would expect to neither split those siblings into two different schools nor move the student that is already a vested member of Walsh to a new school. As it is mapped out currently, Old Town Elementary is less than 2 miles away from Walsh compared to 5.7 miles to Chisholm. We will also be crossing the railroad at Sam Bass and again at 620 which would create a 'hazardous route' that does not currently exist for Old Town children. In addition, there are many special education, talented and gifted, extra curricular activities and college preparatory courses provided at Walsh that are currently not at Chisholm Trail.
Many of us purchased our homes after extensive research regarding school ratings, affordability and community cohesiveness. We moved to this area with the aspiration of wanting our children to excel in academic excellence and performance from a school that would promote higher learning and college prep courses such as Gateway to Tech and others. These proposed changes jeopardize RRISD's goal of creating demographically balanced schools. Please join us in signing this petition to keep ALL of Old Town Elementary attending Walsh Middle School.
