THE CHARITY MENCAP TO CHANGE ITS NAME

THE CHARITY MENCAP TO CHANGE ITS NAME
The Issue
The JIP is a Self Advocacy group run by people with Learning Disabilities. It was established in 2000 and is supported by North Kent Independent Advocacy Scheme.
We are campaigning to change the charity name of Mencap because many people feel the name Mencap (Mentally Handicapped) is no longer appropriate or represents accurately people with learning disabilities.
Mencap originally set up in 1946 and was called the National Association of Parents of backward children.
In 1955 it changed its name to the National Society for Mentally Handicapped Children.
In 1969 the Society shortened its name to Mencap which was acceptable at the time but nearly 50 years later in 2016 the name Mencap (Mentally Handicapped) no longer has a place in modern society.
So if enough people agree that the name does not represent people with learning disabilities and has negative connotations then we will advocate that the name must change.
