Roosevelt Island Residents Are Entitled to Democracy

The Issue

Governor Cuomo has replaced a community-elected resident by a non-resident of his choice on RIOC's board.

We, the community of Roosevelt Island, are outraged by his (and the Republican State Senate's) lack of regard for democratic principles and his disruption of the democratic process that his three predecessors employed when appointing RIOC Directors.

The underhanded, furtive, callous imposition of a non-resident, employed on Roosevelt Island for less than a year, upsets fourteen years of striving toward representative democracy.

We insist that appointments abide by the precedents of prior gubernatorial administrations and that Island residents be granted a say in who is appointed to RIOC Director positions.

Throughout America, citizens participate in the governance of their hometowns. We deserve no less!
