

Sankofa Video Books & Cafe owners Shirkiana and Haile Gerima will hold a press conference related to the DC Council’s impending vote to approve their tax abatement, and their plans to join the movement to save legacy black business in gentrifying DC. Don’t Mute DC and Howard University researchers will also announce focus groups and future forums related to black businesses and communication/cultural divides at this event.

BARRY FARM HISTORIC DESIGNATION
Speak out at this hearing about designating Barry Farm a DC historic landmark. First established after the Civil War to give land to formerly enslaved people, Barry Farm more recently was the birthplace of Junkyard Band and site of demolished public housing. Landmark status aims to preserve this history and continue the conversation about affordable housing in DC.

While the DC council restored vital operating funds to the only medical facility in Ward 7/8 in the short term, the city still plans close UMC in 2023.
