SAFE Coalition NC is requesting Charlotte City Manager Ron Carlee to only consider internal candidates for the position of CMPD Police Chief. We believe CMPD's reduction in crime, community relations and philosophy can be continued from a local chief.

The Issue

  1. Under Chief Monroe, Charlotte has achieved the lowest number of homicides since police began keeping track of uniform crime statistics in 1977. We believe that only someone that has trained under Chief Monroe can continue this work.
  2. CMPD's handling of the 2012 Democratic National Convention, which brought hundreds of protesters to Charlotte, resulted in no major incidents.Charlotte will be hosting similar events in the future and expect this type of leadership from our Police Chief.
  3. CMPD coordinated several large protest during the Black Lives Matter direct actions that accrued during the fourth quarter of 2014. CMPD allowed for everyone's voice to be heard, public protest and traffic control. There was not one single arrest.
  4. CMPD has initiated community outreach programs like Cops and Barbers that are national models in the field of community policing.
  5. CMPD has worked with the residents of Charlotte to reform our Citizens Review Board, pass a Civil Liberties Resolution  and open community dialogue with CMPD. Only a internal hire will be experienced in the finer points of CMPD's local methodology.
