Some good news from the Roll-on Bikes on all NSW Trains campaign!
In June 2026, it was announced that the roll-on service on the Dubbo XPT will be continued, following the successful trials in 2024 and 2025. The start date is still be be advised.
Transport for NSW also plans to conduct an unboxed bikes trial on some TrainLink coach services. This is important as future train replacement coach services need to carry all passenger luggage including bicycles, and many communities are only served by coaches.
In addition, it was recently confirmed that three roll-on bicycles will be taken on the new 3-car Regional Intercity Trains. The latest news is on the Regional Rail fleet project website.
Although we remain disappointed by the limitations of the trials, this progress is a promising win for regional communities and regional tourism. Bike tourism is valued at over $2 billion a year in Australia but NSW misses out on its fair share. Bicycle NSW thanks the NSW Government for taking these small but significant steps forward.
"This is very encouraging news," said Bicycle NSW CEO Peter McLean.
"A huge thank you to everyone who has supported the campaign, signed the petition and written to politicians. Please try and take advantage of the next trials when they are up and running. It is important to show Transport for NSW that there is a lot of demand for rolling bikes onto trains."
And, of course, continue to write to decision makers to ask them to keep the pressure up for a permanent solution across all NSW TrainLink services!
