A Beckton Parks Master Plan was adopted by the Newham Council's Cabinet in January 2024 and it does include reference to a Community Farm with Green Skills hub.
However, in September and October 2021, when the formal closure of Newham City Farm (as was) was made public, the former-Cabinet Member for the Environment, James Asser, also made a public commitment to a future Beckton Parks Master Plan including "an animal offer" and this commitment, a priority factor for the majority of residents, is not made explicit in the Master Plan.
At the General Election in July 2024, James Asser became the MP for West Ham and Beckton which includes his former Council Ward of Beckton and also Custom House Ward where the closed farm site is located. Custom House Councillor Sarah Ruiz has now taken on James' previous mantel of Deputy Mayor and Cabinet Member for the Environment which incorporates responsibility for parks and green spaces and hence the implementation of the Beckton Parks Master Plan.
It would appear that the BPMP is not legally binding. It also relies on application for / provision of funding from sources outside the Council and on successful bids for future tenders to implement and operate different parts of the plan.
According to the plan, the farm area falls within Phase 1, therefore the earliest phase.
It can only be hoped that those with the power to bring about plans or not will recognise the importance of this place, evidence documented in many places including the number of signatories to this petition which was first presented to the Council in October 2021, and the strength of feeling which still exists and enable the site to become a farm and give priority to some animal provision to meet a wide variety of needs even if there will also be a green skills hub. Hopefully, the potential for it to be a sustainable, successful venue will be realised by a dedicated, expert operator.
