MLB: Show Our Kids What Sportsmanship and Civility Look Like
The Issue
Have you ever noticed that opposing Major League Baseball teams never shake hands? After each game, the winning team members do a self-congratulatory high-five line, and the losing team goes into the clubhouse. Even after a 3- or 4-game series, the teams don’t line up.
It’s time for the MLB to introduce end-of-series handshakes between opposing teams. Let “America’s Pastime” set an example for the nation’s children (and their parents), showing us all that even the fiercest opponents can meet after the contest is over and appreciate each other’s talent and hard work. Little League players line up for high-fives after every game; how wonderful it would be for them to see their idols doing the same thing at the highest level of the sport.
Any challenges with this idea can be overcome. All other professional sports still retain this tradition of sportsmanship and camaraderie. Let’s bring it to the MLB!
