Make Texting While Driving a 1st Offense in Nebraska

Make Texting While Driving a 1st Offense in Nebraska
The Issue
Nebraska needs to change texting while driving to a primary offense. The people of Nebraska need to look up and stop texting while driving. I want texting while driving to STOP. The amount of drivers that have their eyes on their phones is shocking!!
According to the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA), 10% of all fatal crashes and 15% of all injury crashes were caused by distracted drivers. Here’s a look at some other NHTSA statistics that show the dangers of distracted driving:
9% of drivers between the ages of 15-19 involved in fatal crashes were distracted at the time of the accident.
EVERY DAY approximately 11 people are killed due to distracted driving and more than 1000 people are injured in distracted driving accident.
When texting and driving, crash risks increasing dramatically- as much as 23 times higher when a driver uses a cell phone while driving.
It has been proven multiple times that texting while driving is much more dangerous than driving drunk.
Based on these texting and driving facts and statistics, it’s clear that distracted driving is a huge problem facing our society.
As of March 2016, 46 states have banned texting and driving. Nebraska does not enforce this law as a primary offense, instead, it enforces this law as a secondary offense. A secondary offense is an offense for which a law enforcement officer can issue a ticket only if the driver has been pulled over for committing another traffic violation. A primary offense is a law where an officer can stop a car and issue a ticket for a traffic violation such as texting while driving.
Please help me change texting while driving to a primary offense. Let’s make Nebraska roads safer!
