We are horrified by the disgraceful behavior of Carden Circus in 2023.
They used Betty for rides before, after, and during the circus, as well as forced her to do stupid tricks. Carden hit a new low by also using Betty as a living flag during an extremely loud skit. Then they play a video bragging about their elephant care!
We all know that elephants are never cared for in the circus.
Care doesn't mean putting her in danger by dragging her around the country in a cramped trailer. It doesn't mean denying her any semblance of a normal and natural life.
By our count, Betty traveled more than 3,000 miles BY MARCH 1. From there, she traveled many thousands more through November as the Cardens profited off of her misery.
To add insult to injury, the USDA, which is responsible for monitoring the well-being of animals used by their licensees, hasn't checked on Betty since February 15. Carden Circus has already announced shows for 2024 in Iowa, Ohio, Missouri, Oklahoma, Texas, Minnesota, and Wisconsin.
If the USDA is not going to act, we MUST. And it will take ALL of us!
CWI is working on new strategies to raise awareness about circus cruelty in the small communities the circus hides in. But we can't continue without you.

This year we saw powerful proof that animal advocacy works: The Mirage in Las Vegas no longer has dolphin tanks and lion cages, circus activity is down, Jay Owenhouse launched a magic show WITHOUT tigers, and we had the largest interest we've ever experienced in our Vegas VegFest event.
Still, we wish animals had the legal protections they deserve. We wish they universally received the respect that is rightfully theirs. Until that day, we continue to fight.
