To: The Nobel Committee for Physics and the Royal Swedish Academy of Sciences

We, the undersigned, respectfully submit this petition to urge the Nobel Committee to award the Nobel Prize in Physics to Dr. Jocelyn Bell for her groundbreaking discovery of pulsars and her extraordinary contributions to the field of astrophysics.

Dr. Bell, a brilliant astrophysicist, is widely recognized for her pivotal role in the discovery of the first radio pulsar in 1967, an achievement that transformed our understanding of the universe. As a Ph.D. student at the University of Cambridge, Dr. Bell, under the supervision of Professor Antony Hewish, was the first to identify a unique, repeating radio signal—an unknown celestial source. This discovery led to the identification of pulsars, rapidly rotating neutron stars emitting regular radio pulses, which are now understood to be critical pieces of evidence for understanding stellar evolution and cosmic phenomena.

Although Dr. Bell's discovery was groundbreaking, the Nobel Prize for this achievement was controversially awarded solely to her supervisor, Antony Hewish, in 1974, while Dr. Bell was not recognized with the prize. This omission remains a significant injustice in the history of the Nobel Prizes, especially given the transformative nature of her discovery and the essential role she played in its identification. The contributions of a Ph.D. student to a discovery of such magnitude should not be overlooked, particularly when the individual made substantial intellectual and technical contributions.

Dr. Bell's discovery has had far-reaching implications in astrophysics, including providing crucial insights into the nature of compact objects, magnetic fields, and the behavior of matter under extreme conditions. Furthermore, pulsar research has expanded into many fields of science, from cosmology to the development of precise timekeeping systems.

In addition to her pioneering scientific work, Dr. Bell has become a champion for diversity and inclusion in the sciences. Throughout her career, she has worked tirelessly to promote gender equality and to mentor young scientists, especially women and minorities, encouraging them to pursue careers in physics and astronomy.

In recognition of her exceptional scientific achievements, groundbreaking discoveries, and her continued efforts to support and inspire future generations of scientists, we call upon the Nobel Committee to posthumously honor Dr. Jocelyn Bell with the Nobel Prize in Physics.

This recognition would not only right a historical wrong, but also serve as a testament to the immense contributions of women in science, whose groundbreaking work has often gone unrecognized by the broader scientific community.

Thank you for considering our petition.
