Bats could be a natural predator to the ZIKA Virus
The Issue
The Zika Virus is fast becoming a real threat to people all over South America and it has now made its way to North America on the back of an insect that only travels a few hundred yards during its lifetime. While Miami, Florida scrambles in trying to keep mosquito populations under control with powerful and noxious insecticides, I call on the State's governor and the Mayor of Miami, Florida to introduce bat colonies into the areas of Wynwood and other neighboring communities-- in addition to the methods that are presently employed. As a natural predator, bats are opportunistic insectivores that have helped to minimize mosquito populations (and other pests) throughout recent history. Other unintended benefits of such a course of action include the reduced necessity for noxious chemical treatments, the benefits to bats as a species, and a meaningful contribution to the ecological food cycle.
