Rhondda Council: Cancel Both Blackface Acts From Tribute in the Park

In May Durham Pride cancelled the appearance of Leanne Harper as Beyoncé following rightful objections from the community because she significantly darkens her skin for the performance.
Despite this very public backlash Rhondda Cynon Taf Council has booked Leanne to perform not as one black artist but two (Beyoncé and Leigh-Ann from Little Mix) for their Tribute in the Park event.
Blackface began as a practice to further racial stereotypes, dehumanise black citizens and take their music without crediting them. By booking Leanne Harper Rhondda Council are continuing this tradition that excuses and dismisses the violence against and erasure of black citizens.
Rhondda Cynon Taff is the least ethnically diverse council in Wales (with only 0.8% of residents identifying themselves as non-white) and as such we would expect extra care to be taken not to further isolate and already highly marginalised population.
As it is advertised on their website they describe the venue as a “popular family tourist attraction” and we dread to think of the impression these events would leave on non-white family tourists of Rhondda or Wales as a whole.
We implore them to remove this artists/acts from their bill and consider replacing her/them with more appropriate acts.
