ADDED CONCERN
And now Sky News Australia threatens our society with fabricated lies to Australian farmers that has contributed to a wave of misunderstanding and outrage among rural communities regarding wind farm developments. One of the most damaging claims circulated by Sky News was that discarded wind turbine blades were being secretly dumped in a “graveyard” in far north Queensland. In reality, these materials were stored legally on private property and were intended for future recycling or safe disposal. The broadcast did not reflect the true circumstances, instead fuelling fears that renewable energy infrastructure creates hidden environmental problems.
Sky News also implied that wind farms pose significant ecological risks, suggesting turbines generate vast amounts of non-recyclable waste and that renewable energy is not truly “clean.” However, these negative impacts are exaggerated and do not represent the practices planned for recycling, re-use, or responsible management of turbine materials. By ignoring facts and visualising stored blades as evidence of environmental harm, the reporting has misled viewers about the genuine sustainability of wind energy and as a result of this misinformation, many farmers and local communities have experienced increased division, stress and opposition to important renewable projects. It is critical that media outlets and public figures report facts accurately and promote honest, evidence-based discussion about wind energy, to ensure Australia’s energy transition is both fair and informed.
Sky News Australia’s repeated breaches of media codes and laws demonstrate a pattern of knowingly stoking misinformation, which is a direct threat to Australia’s multicultural society and democracy.
The Australian Broadcasting Services Act 1992 and the Commercial Television Industry Code of Practice 2015 require all broadcasters to present factual material accurately and fairly, and to clearly distinguish fact from commentary in current affairs programming.
Investigations by the Australian Communications and Media Authority (ACMA) found that Sky News Australia violated these obligations several times, broadcasting segments that misrepresented viewpoints, presented false information as fact, and blurred the line between opinion and objective reporting, particularly in climate coverage. These violations go beyond simple error; they reflect a systemic disregard for the legal requirements of truthful journalism in Australia.
Such failures have deep consequences for multicultural Australia, where misinformation spreads distrust, fear, and division, particularly against minority and vulnerable communities. Australia’s media laws and the MEAA Journalist Code of Ethics specifically forbid the suppression of relevant facts, distortion, and the unnecessary emphasis on personal characteristics like ethnicity or nationality. By frequently violating these standards, Sky News Australia undermines social harmony and fosters an environment hostile to truth and mutual respect.
Given Sky News Australia’s documented disregard for legal standards and repeated breaches that stoke division and misinformation, there is a pressing case for revoking its media license, as allowed by the Broadcasting Services Act, to protect Australia’s democracy and multicultural values.
