Revise primary healthcare funding for youth
The issue
My name is Harriet, and like many young people aged 14-17 in New Zealand, I find myself facing financial stress whenever I need to visit my general practitioner. Each visit sets me back by $55, a considerable amount for someone my age who frequently needs prescriptions and medical advice. Many of my peers share this financial burden, often delaying necessary healthcare because of cost concerns.
The New Zealand government's current policy entitles free general practice visits for most children under 14 and offers free or reduced-cost care for some young people aged 14-17. However, eligibility is inconsistent and varies significantly depending on the practice and specific conditions of the visit. This inconsistency leaves many of us in precarious situations, forcing us to choose between our health and our wallets.
Access to healthcare should not force a young person to save money at the expense of their health or well-being. The government's health policy must evolve to improve inclusivity and eliminate unpredictability in costs for young people. According to recent statistics, youths in New Zealand are increasingly experiencing mental health issues, with a reported rise in depression and anxiety rates among teenagers. By improving access to affordable, reliable healthcare, we can mitigate these issues and promote a healthier, empowered future generation.
Our proposed solution is simple: enforce a uniform policy where all individuals under 18 have access to free general practice visits, irrespective of enrollment status with participating practices. This would remove the existing barriers and ensure that every young person receives the necessary medical attention without the financial strain.
This policy adjustment would not only alleviate the immediate cost pressures on families but also support early intervention and regular health check-ups. It echoes healthcare access recommendations from various health organizations and aligns with New Zealand's commitment to equal healthcare access.
Young people deserve equitable access to healthcare during these formative years, without the added stress of financial constraints. We urge the New Zealand government to review and adjust their healthcare funding policy for young people, ensuring consistent, fair, and accessible healthcare for all.
Sign this petition to push for a change in policy that will make healthcare affordable for New Zealand’s youth. Each signature brings us one step closer to a more inclusive and healthier society for our young people.
