The Issue

The opening of a new mall in Butterworth should have been a beacon of hope and opportunity for local residents. Instead, it has become a source of frustration and discontent due to the hiring practices being used. As a long-time resident of this community, I, like many others, envisioned a boost to our local economy and job market. Sadly, that vision has been clouded by hiring criteria that seem disconnected from the very community this development was meant to serve.

The mall's management has opted for a hiring process that places a heavy emphasis on applicants from outside Butterworth, neglecting the local workforce desperate for employment. Many skilled and talented individuals residing here are being overlooked in favor of outsiders, raising concerns about the commitment of mall officials to the community's welfare. This decision not only denies locals the opportunity to work but also impacts family incomes and community morale.

In Butterworth, unemployment is a persistent issue, with many families struggling to make ends meet. According to recent data, unemployment in the region stands at nearly 30%, a staggering figure that highlights the urgent need for more job opportunities for local people. Hiring from outside does not only ignore this pressing need but also undermines the economic growth the mall had promised to bring to our town.

We propose that the mall's administration revises their hiring practices to prioritize local candidates first. Establishing quotas for local employment, mandating outreach to local job-seekers, and prioritizing local talent for positions are steps that can be taken to address this issue. By implementing such measures, the mall can genuinely endear itself to the community and support the very residents who will patronize their businesses.

Implementing a transparent hiring process, one that involves local stakeholders and ensures fairness, can restore community trust. This would also pave the way towards a mutually beneficial relationship between the mall and the residents of Butterworth.

Please join me in urging the mall's management to revisit their policies and prioritize employment for local residents. Sign this petition to make our voices heard, and let us work towards a fair hiring practice that truly benefits Butterworth.
