The Issue

In our community, where most households consist of elderly couples, some facing physical disabilities or mobility challenges, the introduction of the new purple-top glass recycling bins by the Casey Council has raised significant concerns. We appreciate and support the Council's commitment to improving recycling and achieving environmental targets. However, the requirement for an additional glass recycling bin is impractical and places an undue burden on many residents.

For households like ours, the volume of glass waste produced is minimal. Our current recycling habits are more than sufficient in managing the small amount of glass we consume. Mandating a separate, specific container for glass creates unnecessary logistical challenges at home and the stress of managing additional storage, all of which can be particularly challenging for those with mobility issues.

Moreover, the financial implications of this mandate are concerning. Residents are seeing increased land rates to cover the management of these extra bins, despite not benefiting from them proportionally. This added cost is neither justified nor equitable for residents who simply do not generate enough glass waste to necessitate such an investment.

We urge the Council to reassess the need for these additional bins within our neighbourhood. A more tailored approach to waste management that considers the unique demographic and logistical circumstances of each area can achieve the desired environmental goals without overburdening residents. Solutions such as communal glass collection points, or an opt-out program for those producing minimal glass waste, would be a more efficient and effective use of resources.

By signing this petition, you support the call for a fair and balanced recycling initiative that respects the needs and capacities of our community. Let’s work towards a recycling solution that truly benefits everyone involved.
