The Issue

As a Learning Disability Nurse and a family member of individuals with learning disabilities, I witness daily how current healthcare systems are failing those they are supposed to support. It's heartbreaking to see individuals struggling due to services that are not only inadequate but also difficult to access. With the recent proposals set forth, there is a real risk of further marginalizing people with learning disabilities by streamlining services in ways that restrict access and reduce essential support.

Historically, the 'Valuing People' principles have upheld the belief that individuals with learning disabilities should have the same rights and choices as everyone else. This includes access to high-quality, specialised care delivered by trained and experienced staff. However, the current attitude towards healthcare services seems to overlook these fundamental values, pushing for generic solutions instead of individualised care which can be far more effective.

According to NHS Digital data, people with learning disabilities are still dying on average 20 years younger than the general population. These statistics are a somber reminder of why specialised attention and services are crucial. Moreover, research published by Mencap highlights that over a third of healthcare professionals lack adequate training to provide the necessary care for individuals with learning disabilities, which often leads to misdiagnosis or delayed diagnosis.

We demand a thorough review of the current healthcare white papers in light of these principles—particularly the policies that impact assessments and support services for those with learning disabilities in England. If we truly value people, we must ensure that they receive the care and support they need and deserve, not just what is convenient for the system.

Our call is simple yet urgent: ensure that any revisions or overhauls to the healthcare policies prioritize the needs of individuals with learning disabilities, integrating their viewpoint and that of their families and caregivers. Establish training programs for healthcare professionals to effectively cater to their unique needs, ensuring they receive timely and correct diagnoses, followed by comprehensive care plans.

Please sign this petition if you believe that every person with a learning disability deserves to live a fulfilling, independent life supported by a healthcare system that truly values every individual's unique needs.
