Tonight, Cumberland Council voted 12:2 to overturn the ban on books featuring same-sex parents.
Every signature demonstrated the strength of our community's resolve. Together, our voices have made it clear that the LGBTQ+ community deserves better, that these 'culture wars' and book banning are not welcome here, because Australia is better than this. Our message was clear: Every family matters. You cannot erase Rainbow Families - we exist, too.
As a proud same-sex parent, I am overwhelmed with gratitude and hope for my family. We've sent a powerful message of acceptance and equality not only to the Cumberland community, but to communities and same-sex families across the country. But there's still a long way to go.
Huge thanks to Tara and Ghassan at Equality Australia, and to Caroline Staples for her unwavering advocacy and strength throughout. Let's continue to support Equality Australia and the incredible work they do.
Together, we've made a huge difference. Thank you.
