Dear friends, A lot has been going on behind the scenes, as we continue to look for ways to get independent and non-commercial genre music to the widest audience possible. Sadly, it doesn’t look like ABC Radio National is an option – however, there are other possibilities we are exploring. We are yet to be convinced that ABC management fully understands the impact of their decisions, and are working hard with like-minded people to make sure they do, and respond effectively. Earlier this month, the campaign was represented at the Music Australia Roundtable conference in Sydney. We spoke about the campaign itself in relation to the topic “Why Independent Music Matters”. The resulting article, published by Music Australia, is here: http://musicaustralia.org.au/2017/08/why-independent-music-matters/ We were also able to meet with Chris Scaddan (Head ABC Radio Music), and are pleased to say that lines of communication are open between ourselves and the ABC. At the Music Australia Roundtable, Scaddan announced an incentive which may serve Australian independent music well in future – to incorporate a wider platform for genre music within a format along the same line as JJJ’s ‘Unearthed’. This would likely assist artists more than audiences, and (we think) would need to be serviced by dedicated radio programs that would give this music exposure to audiences across the country (including regional areas). More here: http://www.theindustryobserver.com.au/chris-scaddan-abc-eyes-replication-of-unearthed-format/ We’d also like to acknowledge and congratulate APRA AMCOS for taking initiative in addressing some of the issues that resulted from cuts at the ABC. The Inside Sleeve’s Paul Gough is now hosting a very exciting new program called ‘Playback’, featuring music from Australia and New Zealand. ‘Playback’ is available to stream online (via Sydney’s 2ser), and also available to community radio stations. If you’re involved in community radio and would like to find out more, please contact APRA AMCOS. http://2ser.com/playback/ http://playback.apraamcos.com.au/playback/2017-08-24 Paul Gough also continues to produce great shows at Pimpod. Have a look and subscribe! https://www.pimpod.com Lucky Oceans is getting back into the music game and will soon be making some appearances in Melbourne: https://www.luckyoceans.com/home We may be calling on you in the near future for additional support, so watch this space!
