SEGM is a fringe pseudoscience group that promotes misinformation, advocates for conversion therapy, and has ties with The American College of Pediatricians, a religious group that opposes vaccine mandates and same-sex adoption. They are known for promoting the outlandish claim that most transgender people detransition due to regret. In contrast, the peer-reviewed literature demonstrates that detransition rates are very low, with the largest observational studies showing regret rates of less than 1% (Boskey et al., 2025, Nyquist et al., 2024).
SEGM funds the publication of "reviews" and commentaries that promote misinformation by mischaracterizing the transgender health literature. Their members are then paid to provide "expertise" and cite these reviews in court cases challenging gender affirming healthcare bans. The Alliance Defending Freedom, another Southern Poverty Law Center-designated hate group, has provided payments for their testimony.
