On July 29, 2025, leaders at Brown Health announced that they will delay the closure of the Noreen Stoner Drexel birthing center at Newport Hospital for one year. This decision comes after community outcry and activism, including a petition with over 3,200 signatures. The delay provides more time for community engagement and discussion.

Brown Health had initially planned to close the birthing center at the end of the year due to funding concerns. However, the community, including doctors, nurses, birthing center staff, residents, and elected officials, mobilized to advocate for its continued operation. A rally at Newport City Hall, the petition, and emails,  letters, and calls to Brown Health and Newport Hospital were key components of this effort. The delay is considered a "small win" in the broader fight for reproductive justice, demonstrating the power of collective action and engagement.

We will continue mobilizing, advocating, and fighting. Stay tuned and stay involved!
