We're making progress, and your support keeps us moving forward! Here's what's happened so far: The support is coming from across the chemical sciences community. We are seeing people across generations, genders, career stages, countries, and backgrounds, from students and Gen Z chemists to established scientists, educators, industry professionals, and longtime ACS members. People are also sharing the petition independently on LinkedIn and elsewhere, often adding their own reasons for wanting the historic logo restored. For perspective, ACS’s own governance rules allow a petition to amend the Society’s Constitution or Bylaws to be initiated by just 25 ACS members. We have now passed 500 signatures and are still growing. That should make clear how seriously people are taking this issue. ACS says stakeholders were consulted during the rebrand, but the broader membership was never given a transparent opportunity to compare the designs or decide whether the historic ACS identity should be replaced. Multiple concepts were considered internally, yet members have not been shown those alternatives or the evidence behind the final choice. ACS is a large and well-resourced organization. It can manage the PR around an unpopular decision. The real question is whether it chooses to manage the optics or actually listen to the people speaking up. This is becoming a test of how seriously ACS values the community that gives the Society its scientific credibility, volunteers its time, serves in its governance, publishes and reviews its science, attends its meetings, and has built ACS over generations. Our goal is clear. We want ACS to reverse this decision and restore the historic logo. We also want ACS leadership to think twice before making another major, top-down decision about the identity of the Society without meaningful involvement from the people it represents. If you have already signed, please send the petition directly to 5 to 10 colleagues, students, mentors, friends, or fellow ACS members. If you signed without leaving a comment, please go back and add one. Tell ACS why you signed. The reasons behind these signatures matter just as much as the number. 500 and counting. Let’s take this to 1,000 and turn this momentum into a reversal.
