We sent out a questionnaire to over 578 candidates across 29 communities asking them if they understood what they could do as councillors and mayors to help move us toward sustainable mass transit on Vancouver Island. 112 of them were brave enough to stand on their principals and make a clear statement of support for the island railway. Others expressed support but didn't want to go on record. Two candidates were anti-rail.
Almost all agree the Island Rail Corridor must be protected because it couldn't realistically be rebuilt once removed. Their main reasons are rapid population growth, highway congestion and the need for a second route when highways like the Malahat or Highway 4 are closed. Most see rail as the backbone of a connected system with buses, trails and housing near stations. They favour a phased approach, starting with a Victoria–West Shore commuter service, built in partnership with First Nations and funded largely by the provincial and federal governments. Candidates differ mainly on pace: some say the case is already made, while others want a clear business case first. Most say the opportunity is too valuable to lose.
Voter cards have been created to help voters decide on election day 17 Oct 2026!
