Against the proposed Pig Farm at Toecroft Farm Lane, Sprotbrough, Doncaster, DN5 7PQ

The Issue

Proposed Pig Farm at Toecroft Farm Lane, Sprotbrough, Doncaster, DN5 7PQ

F. E. Lodge & Son have applied to Doncaster council to construct at 997 pig finishing unit at the above address.   The application says the size of the unit will be 811sq metres.  This will give each (up to 110kg) pig just over 0.8 sq metres each.

If you google the Doncaster Planning Portal and enter 20/02870/FUL you can see the planning application in full.   You can also raise a comment on the application.  You can also email the planning officer direct at Jessica.duffield@doncaster.gov.uk with your comments.  The picture is of another UK pig farm.

We are asking you to sign this application to show that you are concerned about the pig finishing unit, and do not support it.  A few hundred metres away from a residential housing estate and the impact it will have on our community.

-      Holding 997 110kg pigs in approx 0.8sq M each is immoral even if legal
-      The nearest houses to the pig finishing unit are 290m away
-      The local Parish park where children and families attend is 650m away
-      The local primary school is 875m away.
-      The increased traffic and lorries will enter the farm via a residential housing estate and parents are worried about the safety of their children
-      A large percentage of the village will live within a mile of the proposed pig farm
-      People who currently live near a pig farm report that the smell is constant and the guardian newspaper described the smell as similar to decomposing bodies.
-      People who live near pig farms report fly infestations and have to keep windows closed even during summer
-      The noise that 997, 110kg pigs that hardly ever move will create, will be loud and impact neighbours negatively who live less than 300m away.
-      It has been shown that Ammonia levels will be increased and these could be very hazardous to our health.
-      The 811 sq. M unit is equivalent to 10 new houses being built  (at UK average size) and completely packed with squealing pigs in every room.
-      Many similar applications have been turned down by councils due to the above reasons.
-      Grimsby council recently turned down a planning application for new houses next to a pig farm due partly to the noise, smell and impact that householders would have to endure so close to a pig farm.
-      While there are plenty of negatives to the proposed pig farm, there are no economic positives in the proposal that will be brought to the village.

The farmer has paid for a number of reports to be produced by consultants.  Regarding noise, odour, transport and biodiversity.   All of these reports say “don’t worry, even if you live just over a few hundred metres away, there will be no noise, smell, transport or fly issues, however close you live and whichever way the wind blows”  This is not the experience of people who live further away from pig farms than we will from this proposed pig farm.    They say it has devastated their life and happiness. At present we can smell and hear the normal operations of a small community farm.  We welcome it. The farm and these operations were here before the houses.  A huge industrial pig farm on the massive scale was not.  If we can hear and smell it now, when 997, 110kg pigs are placed in just over than 0.8m each, in a unit the size of 10 houses  we will certainly smell it and hear it much more, it  will not be the normal farm smells that are smelt now.

We will share this petition with the council. Please sign this petition to show that you are concerned about the proposed pig farm. Much more importantly please visit the Doncaster Planning Portal and enter 20/02870/FUL and raise your comment. Alternatively email the planning officer at Jessica.duffield@doncaster.gov.uk
