The Issue

The chilling legacy of residential schools is a reality that generations of Indigenous peoples in Canada have endured. The pain, the loss, and the suffering are etched deeply in the fabric of their history, yet there are voices that seek to undermine this painful past by denying the gravity of the injustices that occurred within these institutions. At Trent University, we believe that denialism has no place, which is why we are calling for action against Christopher Dummit, whose views not only question the validity of this dark chapter of history but also propagate harmful misconceptions.

Christopher Dummit's take on residential schools seems to omit the profound suffering inflicted under the guise of "education." His perspective dangerously flirts with the narrative that the Canadian government and these schools meant no harm—completely disregarding the traumatic reality lived by thousands of First Nations, Métis, and Inuit children. The infamous phrase "kill the Indian, save the child" was not just a byline; it was a policy driving these institutions. Children were forcibly taken from their families, stripped of their cultural identity, and subjected to environments where they lost their fundamental rights as human beings.

The students of Trent University wish to stand on the right side of history. We argue that anyone who publicly denies the brutal reality of residential schools does not belong in our academic community. To us, it is imperative that our campus remains a space that honors the truth of Indigenous histories and acknowledges the ongoing struggles Indigenous peoples face. Dummit's continued presence at Trent University, given his stance, is not just inappropriate but reflects poorly on an institution that values truth, reconciliation, and respect for all cultures.

Trent University must uphold its commitment to critical and inclusive education by disassociating itself from views that minimize the atrocities committed in residential schools. This petition calls upon university officials to review Dummit’s position and ensure that Trent is a space where denialism and divisive, racist ideologies are left outside its doors. Only then can we foster a learning environment that truly acknowledges and respects the diversity and history of our nation.
