As per the demonetization drive by Government of India that started from Nov 9th, 2016, the NRIs (Non resident Indians) and PIOs (Persons of Indian Origin) who live outside of India have to visit India to deposit their old notes ₹500 & ₹1000. The last date is Dec 30th for deposits in Banks and Mar 31st for deposits at RBI offices.

Anyone leaving outside India can carry up to ₹25000 in Indian Currency while leaving India and can bring back that much amount (except 4 neighboring countries). NRIs and PIOs usually keep few hundred or few thousand rupees per person in Indian currency with them so that whenever they visit India they have some cash to spend after landing at an International Airport and before reaching their homes. 

Not everyone who has old notes of ₹500 & ₹1000 would be able to travel to India before Dec 30th or Mar 31st. Not everyone can find a friend or relative who is visiting India to hand over their old notes to him or her. 

As per news in leading newspapers Government of India has formed an inter-ministerial task force to decide strategy to help NRIs and PIOs in this matter. However nothing has been declared so far.

We request Reserve Bank of India and Government of India to facilitate the deposit of old ₹500 & ₹1000 notes with NRIs and PIOs at overseas locations and last date should be at least up to Mar 31st, 2017.
