"...We've asked. We've been heard. But the laws haven't changed, and enforcement is still sparse. Now we're asking the Commonwealth to act— for clean water, honest farming, and small farms that can survive. .."

“It’s a very serious issue to me that has decades-long consequences, and I just wish we could do more to let people know that they're not being a villain or a complainer for having legitimate concerns about what they might be exposed to... Two things can be true at once. We can allow the thriving agricultural community to succeed and go on unimpeded, while also asking for a little more transparency and paying attention to our own health concerns and advocating for members of our community.” — Clelia Sheppard, Cape Charles, VA

“Given the threat to health and biodiversity from pesticides, we must not normalize the illness and contamination linked to their use and exposure—because it is now clear that these toxic chemicals are not needed to grow our food and manage our parks, gardens, playing fields, and schoolyards. It is time to take seriously the commercial viability of organic methods, now a $76 billion agricultural market, and stop poisoning our land, air, water, soil, and food.” — Jay Feldman, executive director, Beyond Pesticides

After experiencing sudden illness from aerial pesticide drift near her Cape Charles home, Clelia Sheppard is raising public awareness about the health hazards of chemical spraying.

Following a May incident involving a crop duster spraying a nearby field, Sheppard filed a complaint with the Virginia Department of Agriculture and Consumer Services to investigate potential regulatory violations.

She is also urging local officials and farmers to establish a warning program to notify residents about pesticide use.

Other grassroots advocacy organizations across Virginia are raising similar concerns and calling for meaningful policy changes. One such organization, Preserve Grayson, is encouraging residents to take action by contacting elected officials and demanding greater accountability.

Their message is simple but powerful:

"Add Your Voice"

"Send the action alert below to policymakers! Your name carries weight. These are our elected representatives, and this is our home. Add your voice."

It's encouraging to see communities across Virginia organizing to protect public health, the environment, and residents' right to have a say in decisions that directly affect their lives. Meaningful change begins when concerned citizens come together and make their voices heard.
