Require LCBO to display addiction resources at all locations
The Issue
Alcohol is one of the leading concerns with addictions and death. Tragically, my dearest friend lost her battle with addiction over the 2025 holidays. She was only 31 when she passed away. Her death was a heartbreaking reminder that addictions are, in part, a mental illness. Far too many lives have been lost in silence because those afflicted don't know where to begin.
I believe that providing visible and accessible resources could be a lifeline for someone in need—a nudging step they might take during a moment of clarity or desperation. LCBO stores see countless visitors throughout the year, many of whom might be struggling with or know someone battling addiction. If every LCBO location displayed pamphlets and brochures listing resources for addiction help at the end shelf units upon exit, numerous lives could be touched and potentially saved.
According to the Canadian Institute for Substance Use Research, alcohol use contributes to more than 18,000 deaths each year in Canada. Often, those caught in the throes of addiction don’t know where to turn for help. Having immediate access to local resource lists at LCBO outlets could provide the crucial first steps towards recovery for many.
Incorporating these resource displays is an actionable and compassionate initiative that can be easily implemented in collaboration with local health agencies and community support organizations. The LCBO, as a leader in responsible alcohol sales and education, is in a prime position to lead this change.
Every day, families are affected by the tragic consequences of alcohol addiction. Let us honor those we’ve lost, like my dear friend, by creating tangible opportunities for change and hope.
Please sign this petition to require LCBO locations across Ontario to display resource information for addiction support. Together, we can make a profound difference, providing hope and assistance to those who so desperately need it.
