The Issue

I honestly do not know what is worse: the men who allegedly showed up and did the deed, or the dozens of other men in that Snapchat group who allegedly did absolutely nothing. They did not call 911. They did not report it. They did not even say, "this is not okay" or "do not do this." And now a woman has reportedly dropped out of college, while everyone else gets to hide behind being called "good guys."

This is exactly why so many women do not feel safe. We keep hearing that men are supposed to protect women, that they are the "good ones," that they would step up when it matters. But when a real emergency happens, silence takes over. That silence is not harmless. It sends a message that a woman’s safety, future, and dignity can be treated like an afterthought.

Cornell needs to stop treating bystander failure like it is invisible. I am calling on Cornell to require students to immediately report suspected sexual violence emergencies, create clear consequences for knowingly refusing to report imminent harm, and provide serious bystander intervention training for students in fraternities, student organizations, and campus housing. If students are in a group chat watching a dangerous situation unfold, the university should not act like doing nothing is acceptable.

We cannot keep building campuses where women are expected to protect themselves while everyone else stays quiet. If you believe silence in the face of violence is part of the problem, please sign this petition and demand Cornell take action now.
