In just two weeks’ time this petition has gained incredible traction — almost 10,000 supporters/signatures and over 41,000 views. That response shows how deeply people across the country and globe feel about safety in relationships and other related domestic situations, showing the dire need for greater transparency!
As I’ve continued researching, listening and reading all your stories, I have been working hard to devise a plan and create a refined, realistic, and survivor-centered approach for a National Domestic Violence Offender Information System. This model aims to address the pros of increased safety while reducing the legal and ethical concerns that have made a public registry difficult to implement in the past.
This update outlines a potential hybrid system that will balance:
- Survivor Safety.
- Offender Accountability.
- Confidential Public Access.
- Privacy.
- Due Process and Ethical Inclusion.
- Fairness.
- And Resource Limitations.
The proposed framework will include:
- The Proposed Name for the Registry, Logo and Domain.
- Core Values.
- Core Principles.
- Potential Registry Model.
- Potential Pitfalls.
- Possible Additions.
- The Potential for a Non-Profit, Front-Facing Call-Center.
- Marketing Tools/PR (QR Codes, Scannable Flyers, other, etc., for this petition initiative).
- Policy White Paper.
My next step is to present the ideas I have compiled to some folks within the legal system, including attorneys that deal with DV related cases, etc. I want them to review my plans to ensure they are solid, legally sound and doable. Once I get adequate feedback and make any necessary refinements, I will post that proposed plan for this model here and the next steps we can potentially take to see this through.
Although this is not a perfect solution — no DV safety solution ever is — but I believe I have found a way to create a balanced, achievable, survivor-centered, and legally feasible approach.
With this in mind, I’d love continued feedback here from supporters, survivors, advocates, legal professionals, and the general public. Your voices matter.
This system is being shaped with you — not for you.
If you’ve experienced abuse, are worried about a partner’s past, the future of a new partner, or work in this field, your input is invaluable.
Together, we can push for something that protects privacy and saves lives!
