We know it’s been a minute, but a few developments occurred recently we want to update you on!
Earlier this year, the City of Orlando stepped back from its push to shut down downtown venues entirely at midnight — a big win for everyone who signed this petition and spoke up. However, this pause is indefinite and will require bar owners and citizens to continue to work with the city on pursuing alternative methods. THANK YOU for using your voice and making a difference!
Some bars have sued the city claiming the after-midnight alcohol license program the city put in place is unconstitutional. This program requires any bar, club, or venue wanting to serve alcohol after midnight to purchase a costly permit, comply with burdensome requirements, and pay ongoing fees.
This week, ClickOrlando reported that the court will allow this licensing program to remain in effect while a lawsuit challenging its legality moves forward. The case argues that these requirements and costs may overstep the city’s legal authority.
Why this matters:
The high costs and red tape put an unfair burden on small businesses, LGBTQ+ spaces, and independent venues which threatening jobs, tourism, and the diversity of our nightlife.
This legal challenge is our best chance to get the program overturned or reformed into something fair and sustainable.
