You only have this weekend to write in support of the DjabWurrung people
The VicRoads route, Option 1, was approved for duplicating the Western Highway from Buangor to Ararat.
Option 1 destroys culturally significant landscape, songlines and 3 sacred trees. Option 1 also destroys hectares of federally protected flora and fauna..
Option 2 was another VicRoads route examined, but not approved, in 2012.
Option 2 destroys even more Large Old Trees and more rare vegetation.
This route separates the 2 areas of cultural significance with major earthworks through the hills.
Option 2 was discarded because it destroyed more of the ancient /precious landscape.
A third option, the Northern Option, has been extensively researched by a community group. The Northern Option would also do damage because there is no good place to put a huge road.
The Northern Option would do less direct and indirect damage by adhering to the principle of "no new roads, no fresh cut”.
The Northern Option simply adds a new carriageway near the existing highway.
You (the public) are invited to make a submission to Barrister Susan Phillips, phillips@stjames.net.au who is reporting to the Department of Energy and Environment on the application by the Djabwurrung people to have their land within Option 1 and 2 protected. Submissions close on this important aspect of the highway upgrade on August 20th. For more information, contact…..fixfreewayfiasco@gmail.com
In the picture...Option 1 is in yellow, Option 2 is in red, Northern option follows the existing highway ( to the North..of course!)
