“”We’re delighted to share important new research on healthy weight outcomes in dogs, recently published in the Journal of the American Veterinary Medical Association. The peer-reviewed study, titled "Gonadectomy status and age are associated with variable risk of overweight or obese outcomes in 15 dog breeds: a retrospective cohort study using data from primary care veterinary clinics," is a collaborative effort between Mars Veterinary Health (including Banfield Pet Hospital) and a multidisciplinary expert team convened by ACC&D.
Our team analyzed anonymized data from over 116,000 dogs seen at Banfield between 2013–2019 to better understand the relationship between sterilization and overweight or obese (OvOb) outcomes in 15 popular dog breeds.
Key Findings:
*OvOb rates in intact dogs vary significantly by breed.
*While post-sterilization OvOb risk also varies, few breeds differ greatly from their size-group peers.
*For small/toy breeds, OvOb risk was similar whether sterilized before puberty or later (at 1+ year). For large dogs, however, OvOb outcomes associated with prepubertal sterilization varied by breed.
Valerie Benka, ACC&D Program Consultant: “Sterilization offers clear health and welfare benefits for dogs, and increased risk of obesity shouldn’t be a reason to avoid surgery. However, these findings can help veterinarians and dog owners be especially attuned to breed-level obesity risks and proactive about mitigation strategies. We know human behaviors greatly influence dog OvOb outcomes through feeding practices and physical activity.”””
