Keep Kaimana Safe for Everyone

Keep Kaimana Safe for Everyone
The Issue
Currently fishing is allowed on Kaimana Beach in even-numbered years. Kaimana is a very popular public beach and home to many threatened and endangered marine species. Most specific to this petition are the green sea turtles and Hawaiian monk seals which have of the highest entanglement rates of any marine mammal. Fishing lines and hooks are hazardous to both people and sea life and recently was the culprit in an episode that nearly claimed the life of a green sea turtle in this specific area. This injured sea turtle and several others frequent the Kaimana area as part of their regular habitat. This also happens to be the specific area where fishermen drop their lines. Our objective is to prohibit fishing within and along the Waikiki-Diamond Head shoreline area at all times.
Currently there are only a few fishermen there each day, but it only takes one hook and fishing line connected or abandoned nets to strangle and eventually kill our threatened and endangered marine life or to injure a swimmer near the sandy beach edge or in the channel.
Fishing should be encouraged and managed around O'ahu, but there are better, safer places to fish than in this very busy beach area.
