I was interested to look at the new website for the UK Honours System (https://honours.cabinetoffice.gov.uk/ and to view the Easy read version of ‘Who deserves an honour?’ which very clearly sets out that amongst the most important criteria are:

  • making a real difference
  • working very hard without expecting to be paid

and, in addition:

  • gaining the respect of those around them
  • changed things for the better for others in need of support and / or help
  • always done the right thing
  • gaining the respect of those around them

(NB Italics mine.)

These criteria are simple enough and, if strictly adhered to, should ensure that those who genuinely deserve to be honoured, are. However, in my opinion, until there is a thorough overhaul of the system and it is freed from political influence, it will not achieve the relevance and fairness that is aspired to.

If you too share this view, help to continue to keep this petition current by signing and sharing, as widely as possible, with family, friends and acquaintances.

Thank you in anticipation!
