...and then comes the news that yet another major party political donor and others who are "simply doing their job" have been given honours. It is surely no coincidence that this latest set of honours, as with the PM's previous list, has been announced just as parliament goes into recess.
If individuals choose to donate money to political party coffers, that is their prerogative, but that they should be given a gong for doing so, is outrageous. As the government states on its own webpage, honours are intended to be given to those who:
- make a difference to their community or field of work
- enhance Britain’s reputation
- are involved in long-term voluntary service
- show innovation and entrepreneurship
- change things, with an emphasis on achievement
- improve life for people less able to help themselves
- display moral courage
I see no category that says being wealthy enough to fund a political party to the tune of several million pounds is a reason to be made a knight or dame.
If you feel as strongly as I do, please continue to raise awareness of this petition. I know how many of you are and I continue to be really appreciative of your support. Thank you!
