The Issue

We, the undersigned, demand that Congress repeal the Johnson Amendment, a 1954 tax code provision (Section 501(c)(3)) that prohibits churches from endorsing candidates or engaging in political campaigns, under threat of losing tax-exempt status. This law silences pastors, infringes on First Amendment rights to free speech and religious exercise, and weakens the church’s role as America’s moral compass.
The Bible calls Christians to be “salt and light” (Matthew 5:13–16), speaking truth to power like Jeremiah (Jeremiah 1:5) and John the Baptist (Mark 6:18). Yet, the Johnson Amendment muzzles pulpits, preventing churches from addressing critical issues. Our tax dollars are misused to fund policies that contradict Christian values, such as those marginalizing believers in foster care or prioritizing secular agendas over Easter (Executive Order 14202, 2025). The Department of Government Efficiency (DOGE) exposes this waste, but churches can’t fully call it out while gagged.
Worse, the Johnson Amendment leaves us vulnerable to cultural threats. Some fear the influence of Sharia law through immigration and local advocacy, which could erode America’s Judeo-Christian heritage. Scripture warns against compromising with false ideologies (2 Corinthians 6:14). With 366 church attacks since 2020, per the U.S. Conference of Catholic Bishops, Christians need a voice to defend their faith.
The IRS rarely enforces the Johnson Amendment—only one church lost tax-exempt status since 1954—yet its threat chills free speech. Pastors defy it annually on Pulpit Freedom Sunday without penalty, proving the law’s weakness. President Trump vowed to “destroy” it in 2017, and with conservatives controlling Congress in 2025, we have a chance to act.
Repealing the Johnson Amendment will:
Restore pastors’ rights to endorse candidates and speak freely.
Empower churches to shape policy on issues like abortion and religious liberty (1 Timothy 2:1–2).
Protect against future persecution by hostile administrations.
Critics claim repeal will politicize churches, but pastors have the wisdom to preach truth in love (Ephesians 4:15). We demand Congress pass the Free Speech Fairness Act to end this unconstitutional restriction. Pastors, turn your muzzle into a megaphone! Christians, join us to restore the church’s voice before it’s too late. Sign this petition to repeal the Johnson Amendment and defend our faith, freedom, and nation. “As for me and my house, we will serve the Lord” (Joshua 24:15).
Decision-Maker: U.S. Congress
