Response from Utah State Representative, Katy Hall.

Our hard working Nick contacted Katy Hall inquiring about what specifically House Bill 261 meant in terms of closing cultural and identity-based centers. Here is what she said:

"Hi Nick,

Thanks for your email. This bill did not require centers to close if they were not exclusive and did not meet the definitions of discrimination. However, it also required that services were not based on personal identity characteristics and that all those services were to be made available through the "All Student Success" centers so that every student has equal opportunity and access. I think each university had to look at their own resources and decide if it made sense to have offices that didn't offer services."

The centers that were closed never barred access to anyone. They were places for everyone and focused on a particular identity or culture. This proves that Weber State University went too far by closing the centers.
