Remove Fulbright Statue and Name from University of Arkansas

Remove Fulbright Statue and Name from University of Arkansas
The Issue
James William Fulbright was the former University of Arkansas president and United States Senator. We believe that his name and his statue should be removed from the University of Arkansas campus because his beliefs are not representative of the campus' vision in making a "better world." J. William Fulbright was a southern Democrat and a segregationist. He signed the Southern Manifesto, which was in opposition of Brown v. Board of Education. He filibustered the Civil Rights Act of 1964 as well as voted against the Voting Rights Act of 1965. In 1950, Fulbright co-sponsored an amendment, which, if enacted, would allow soldiers to choose whether or not to serve in a racially integrated unit. In consideration of his past, we ask that the University of Arkansas remove his name and statue from campus
