Dear Commissioner Morath,

I hope this letter finds you well and committed to our shared goal of ensuring the highest standards in educational leadership across Texas. I am writing to express my grave concern regarding the current administration led by Superintendent Mike Miles in the Houston Independent School District (HISD). It is my sincere belief that immediate measures should be taken to replace him due to several critical issues that have arisen under his leadership.

Lack of Community Trust

Superintendent Miles has not earned the trust of our community. Trust is foundational to effective leadership, yet recent decisions have left community members feeling excluded and unheard.

Negligence of AED and CPR Training

Under Mr. Miles’ leadership, HISD has failed to comply with Texas Education Code and Safety Code regarding Automated External Defibrillators (AED) and CPR training. This negligence puts our students and staff at immense risk, violating HISD Board Policy CKD (LEGAL) that mandates trained personnel must be present whenever a significant number of students are on site.

Student and Staff Safety Concerns

Ensuring a safe educational environment is paramount. Unfortunately, actions by the current administration have jeopardized this safety, as evidenced by multiple ongoing investigations by the Office of Civil Rights.

Reckless Spending and Library Closures

Mr. Miles’ financial decisions, including reckless spending and the closure of libraries, have undermined essential educational resources. These actions are not in alignment with responsible fiscal management and the commitment to educational excellence.

Retaliation and Discrimination Allegations

Chilling allegations of retaliation and discrimination against employees further highlight a troubling culture within HISD that is contrary to achieving our educational and community goals.

Evidence and Board Policy Violations

The mounting evidence, including 13 Office of Civil Rights investigations in the past school year, underscores the urgency of this matter. There are clear violations of HISD Board Policy BJA concerning the superintendent's duties to foster a productive and supportive educational environment.

Given these concerns, I respectfully urge you to consider the immediate removal of Mike Miles from his position as superintendent of the Houston ISD. We need leadership that not only adheres to board policies but also inspires trust, safety, and effective management within our schools.

Thank you for your attention to this urgent matter. I trust in your commitment to uphold the standards of educational excellence in our state and to act in the best interest of our students and community.

Sincerely,
