Urgent: Action needed on S.1071 & the RESPECT Act

Dear President Trump,

I write to you as a son seeking justice and as the voice of countless victims, their families, and veterans who are outraged by a grave injustice.

My mother, Teresa Sunder, was kidnapped, tortured, brutally raped, and murdered along with at least 6+ women when I was only five. Her killer, Fernando Cota, a convicted rapist, serial killer and predator responsible for multiple murders, was inexplicably granted the honor of being buried among America’s heroes at Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery. Sadly, he is not alone, there are many violent felons and predators buried among heroes in other national cemeteries as well. This injustice has haunted me since March, when I made this discovery.

In March, I uncovered the truth behind this travesty. Determined to act, I started a petition and worked with the Senate Committee on Veterans’ Affairs.

Ann Vandersteel exposed this disgrace, while the fake and real news media remained silent, claiming it is "not newsworthy," "doesn’t fit the news cycle," and that they "won’t be doing a story on this." Recently, I participated in a story with KENS5, which featured Esther Ludlow from Once Upon A Crime. Unfortunately, this story did not gain traction, and all other "news media" have refused to cover the issue.

From that petition emerged S.1071, a bill designed to remove Fernando Cota from Fort Sam Houston National Cemetery and ensure that violent felons and predators are not honored among America’s heroes.

In August, the Senate passed S.1071 UNANIMOUSLY, reflecting bipartisan agreement that no individual guilty of heinous crimes should be honored among our nation’s heroes. Yet, the House of Representatives has yet to act, leaving families like mine without resolution. I speak not only for myself but as the voice of victims, their families, and veterans who are outraged by this injustice.

Additionally, my petition led to the proposal of Teresa’s Law, introduced as S.2807: The RESPECT Act in September, designed to prevent such violations from ever occurring again, ensuring that anyone who does not belong among our honored dead is removed and that the sanctity of these sacred sites is protected.

Mr. President, if you agree that no rapist, serial killer, murderer, or predator belongs buried among our veterans who gave their lives for our country, our freedom, and our flag, I ask you to stand with me and sign the petition.

This issue transcends politics; it is a matter of justice, honor, and the protection of American values. My mother, Teresa, deserved to live. She deserves dignity and respect in death.

I respectfully urge you to lend your support and your voice to ensure that the House of Representatives passes S.1071 and that The RESPECT Act is enacted into law. Doing so would honor my mother, countless families, and the integrity of America’s heroes’ resting places.
