Remembrance Is For The Victims, Not War Criminal Ratko Mladić
The Issue
Remembrance is for the victims, not war criminal Ratko Mladić.
Ratko Mladić was not a hero.
He was convicted of genocide, crimes against humanity and war crimes. He was responsible for the Srebrenica genocide, the siege of Sarajevo and other terrible crimes during the war in Bosnia and Herzegovina.
More than 8,000 Bosniak men and boys were killed in the Srebrenica genocide. Thousands of families still live with this pain today.
After Mladić’s death, he was honoured by politicians, public figures and nationalist groups in Serbia and Republika Srpska. A convicted war criminal should never receive public praise, military honours or official remembrance.
This is deeply painful for survivors and the families of victims. It also spreads hate, divides people and makes peace more difficult.
We call on:
- The authorities of Bosnia and Herzegovina to investigate and punish the public glorification of convicted war criminals.
- The European Union to take action when governments and politicians glorify convicted war criminals.
- Public authorities to ban monuments, street names and official events that honour Ratko Mladić or other convicted war criminals.
- Political leaders to respect the court judgments and stand with the victims.
!This is not about nationality or religion. It is about standing against the glorification of a convicted war criminal!
Remembrance belongs to the victims — not to the person convicted for their murder.
