Hello everyone!
Today's update is a lengthy one because I've got a lot to say.
First of all, today is Trans Day of Visibility. A very important day that means more now than ever. Today is a day to remind the world that no matter what it tries to do to convince us otherwise, trans people are valid, they are important, and they are loved. I, and so many of my friends, some of whom are trans themselves, stand proudly with the trans community in these difficult and challenging times. We will never stop fighting to make sure your voices are never silenced.
Now, to commemorate the occasion, I have a few things to share with you.
First, I'd like to share something very special from my friend Danny, a former Pixar alumni who worked on Win or Lose and played a key role in bringing Kai's original trans-centric storyline to life. This morning, he shared a reel showcasing the work that went into this unseen storyline, and it is truly remarkable, to say the least. You can watch it here.
The second thing I want to share is equally as important.
In case you don't remember, in early 2022, LGBTQ+ employees at Disney and it's subsidiaries staged collective walkouts in protest of the company's support for politicians sponsoring Florida's infamous "Don't Say Gay" bill. This movement spawned the #DisneyDoBetter hashtag.
Well, guess what... it's time for round two.
A group of employees have created an open letter condemning the company's continuing and worsening refusal to stand with trans and overall queer voices in the wake of the new Trump administration's attacks on queer rights and the like. This cowardice has recently been exemplified in the company's refusal to release a trans-focused episode of Moon Girl & Devil Dinosaur and their decision to censor the trans-centric storyline in Win or Lose.
People are angry, and rightfully so, and it's time to take a stand and let Disney know that they cannot continue to get away with silencing queer voices, especially when they're needed the most.
You can find the letter here. If you're in the animation industry or the entertainment industry in general, if you're a queer individual or even a queer ally, even if you're an average joe, please spread the word and show your support.
Thank you, and one last reminder: #TransRightsAreHumanRights 🏳️⚧️
